After the long seasons of the scorpion-phoenix, the centaur-archer, and the sea-goat, Aquarius season arrives to wake us from the wintry depths ruled by mythological creatures. Although, by many definitions, it’s not spring yet, the season of the water bearer reminds us about the interconnections between the dead and the living, the dark and the light, and the vast networks of creation in this liminal time of year.
Capricorn’s sea-goat has made his way to the top of the proverbial mountain, only to realize that there are many more mountain peaks around him, not to mention galaxies far-far away. The task of Aquarius is to show us that we are all parts of an interdependent whole and that we must think outside of the box in order to lift off of our individual mountaintops and connect with the rest of humanity.
Aquarians were ancient engineers who created systems that allowed communities to thrive. The aquarii were the citizens of ancient Rome who built the aquaducts, bringing fresh water to the one million citizens of the empire. A true part of the Aquarius archetype is to show us that people can live together harmoniously. Traditionally ruled by Saturn, Aquarius does this by having a plan and thinking about the long-term while always staying on their toes, attuned to the needs and desires of the community.
As the Sun moves into the visionary and innovative sign of Aquarius, the collective energy shifts toward progressive thinking and humanitarian ideals. This is a time to embrace your uniqueness, explore new perspectives, and connect with the broader community. Aquarius season encourages intellectual growth, creativity, and forward-thinking approaches to life, making it an ideal period for brainstorming fresh ideas and collaborating with others. Let the energy of Aquarius this month inspire you to break free from limitations and dream big.
Here are this Aquarius season’s planetary transit highlights:
January 19: Sun enters Aquarius
January 27: Mercury enters Aquarius
January 29: New Moon in Aquarius (Lunar New Year of the Wood Snake)
January 30: Uranus stations direct in Taurus
February 1: Imbolc (Pagan Wheel of the Year Cross-Quarter Day)
February 4: Venus enters Aries AND Jupiter stations direct in Gemini
February 7: Neptune conjunct North Node in Piscesa
February 12: Full Moon in Leo
February 14: Mercury enters Pisces
February 14: Sun enters Pisces
As we make our way through the season of the humanitarian and future-oriented water bearer, it can be helpful to consider the correspondent energies between the sign of Aquarius and the human body and life cycle.
Let’s get into it.
Aquarius in the Body
As I’ve previously discussed, for each astrological season, each Zodiac sign governs certain areas of the body, reflecting its symbolic traits and energetic influence. For Aquarius, these correspondences lie in the ankles, calves, circulatory system, and the body's overall nervous system.
1. Ankles and Calves: Movement and Stability
Aquarius rules the ankles and calves, which are crucial in mobility and balance. Just as these body parts help us move forward, Aquarius is a sign that pushes society toward progress and innovation. The ankles provide stability and adaptability, allowing us to adjust to uneven terrains, symbolizing Aquarius’ ability to embrace change and navigate life’s unpredictability.
Individuals with strong Aquarian energy may be prone to ankle sprains, circulation issues in the calves, or stiffness in these areas, especially when they feel restricted or uninspired. Regular stretching, yoga, and ankle-strengthening exercises can benefit Aquarians, keeping them grounded and agile.
2. The Circulatory System: Energy Flow and Connection
The circulatory system, another domain of Aquarius, represents the flow of energy and connection, much like the humanitarian ideals of this sign. Blood circulation ensures that oxygen and nutrients reach every part of the body, mirroring Aquarius’ desire to spread ideas and resources to benefit the collective. Just as blood makes a revolution around our circulatory systems and electrical impulses make revolutions around our vast network of nerves, Aquarius rules revolutions and networked intelligences.
The counterpoint to Aquarius, on the opposite side of the sky, is Leo, ruled by the Sun and ruler of the heart. The veins and arteries are structural channels responsible for distributing oxygen and nutrients through the body, but they require the heart to beat and pump the blood; the two must work together.
The ankles and lower legs are the hardest part of the body for our blood to reach, and also the most important body parts when it comes to taking bold steps forward into the future and pivoting on a dime when necessary (an Aquarian trait for sure!) A healthy circulatory system is one where all parts of the network of cells in our body are being nurtured and helped… and a healthy Aquarian society just might be one where the many are nurtured and helped instead of a select few.
Poor circulation, varicose veins, and cold extremities are potential issues for Aquarius individuals. Staying active, maintaining a healthy diet, and practicing massage or hydrotherapy can support a healthy circulatory system.
3. The Nervous System: Innovation and Sensitivity
Aquarius’ connection to Uranus ties it to the nervous system, which governs the body’s responses to stimuli. This association reflects Aquarius’ quick-thinking nature, intellectual energy, and ability to process complex ideas. However, the high mental activity of this sign can sometimes lead to nervous tension or stress.
Aquarians may experience overactivity in their nervous systems, which can lead to restlessness, insomnia, or burnout. Meditation, mindfulness, and grounding exercises can help calm their often overstimulated minds.
Aquarius, as the innovator of the zodiac, thrives on change and exploration. This same energy, however, can sometimes pull them away from their physical body as they focus on mental and intellectual pursuits. By fostering a deeper connection to their physical health—particularly their ankles, calves, and circulation—they can maintain the strength and vitality needed to fuel their visionary ideas.
Through balance, mindfulness, and care, Aquarius can remain the energetic Water Bearer, pouring their wisdom and inspiration into the world while keeping their body in harmony. 🌌♒✨
Aquarius in the Life Cycle: The Eccentric Sage (70s & up)
Using the UN’s current average of 73.5 as the total life cycle, Aquarius corresponds with the Eccentric Sage of late life (our 70s and beyond). (Note: Of course, many of us live much longer than this (and many of us quite a bit shorter due to various circumstances), so these are a basic guideline for breaking the wheel of life up into Zodiac signs.)
Aries: Birth & Infancy (0-2)
Taurus: The Sensory World of Toddlerhood (2-4)
Gemini: Chatty Childhood (5-11)
Cancer: Adolescence in the Shell (12-18)
Leo: Our Roaring 20’s (19-27)
Virgo: Saturn Return and It’s Aftermath (28-35)
Libra: Mid-Life Crisis Years (late 30s-early 40s)
Scorpio: The Intimate Depths (late 40s- early 50s)
Sagittarius: Empty Nester/Wanderluster (late 50s-early 60s)
Capricorn: The Peak of the Career/Impact Mountain (Late 60s)
Aquarius: The Eccentric Sage (70s & up)
Pisces: End of Life/the Liminal Space After Death and Before Rebirth.
In the astrological journey through the zodiac, Aquarius aligns with the later years of life—specifically the 70s and beyond. This stage of life embodies the wisdom, independence, and eccentricity that Aquarius represents. During these years, individuals often experience liberation from societal expectations, allowing them to embrace who they are fully. This phase is marked by unapologetic authenticity, where people live in alignment with their truest selves. They become unafraid to express their quirks, explore unconventional hobbies, or champion causes that matter deeply, reflecting Aquarius’ celebration of originality and courage.
Aquarius, ruled by Uranus, brings a visionary perspective to this life stage. Elders at this point often blend their life experiences with a forward-thinking outlook, inspiring future generations and advocating for social progress. They may share bold ideas, mentor younger people, or work to create a legacy that benefits humanity. This stage also deepens their connection to the collective, as they feel a stronger pull toward giving back, engaging in community efforts, and fostering meaningful relationships. Whether volunteering, participating in social justice movements, or staying connected through technology, the Aquarian elder seeks to contribute to a better world.
By this point in life, there is often a detachment from material concerns, which mirrors Aquarius’ focus on intellect, ideals, and experiences over possessions. Many individuals prioritize relationships, learning, and new adventures, finding value in experiences that enrich their minds and spirits. This phase also reflects Aquarius’ preference for freedom and innovation, as elders in this stage explore life on their terms, free from past constraints.
While this phase of life is rich with wisdom and authenticity, it has challenges. The Aquarian elder’s independence can sometimes lead to feelings of isolation, and physical or emotional changes associated with aging may test their adaptability. Their focus on ideas and intellect may also result in a neglect of emotional or practical aspects of daily life. Despite these challenges, Aquarius in the life cycle represents the eccentric elder whose individuality and wisdom inspire others to live authentically. This phase reminds us that life after 70 can be a time of reinvention, freedom, and profound connection to the world. In the true Aquarian spirit, these years hold the potential for dreaming, innovating, and making a meaningful difference.
Self-Care for Aquarius Season
During Aquarius season, we can benefit from practices that enhance flexibility, circulation, and mental clarity. Here are some tips for maintaining balance and health:
Stretch and Strengthen: Yoga or Pilates can improve flexibility and strengthen the ankles and calves, helping to prevent injury.
Boost Circulation: Incorporate activities like walking, swimming, or cycling to promote healthy blood flow.
Stay Grounded: Spend time in nature to balance the air sign’s tendency to remain in the mental or abstract realm.
Relax the Mind: Engage in creative outlets, journaling, or meditation to calm their active nervous system.
Eat for Circulation: Include foods rich in antioxidants, like berries and leafy greens, to support vascular health.
Take good care of yourselves this month!
